The Skills Knowledge Improvement Programme (SKIP)

With increase in competition due to less work available in some areas of IT, 7C Alliance is re-initiating it’s Skills Knowledge Improvement Programme (SKIP). This Programme seeks to source and offer innovative and zero- to low-cost ways that will allow independent IT contractors and consultants to gain or prove their skills – and thereafter use what they have done as a demonstrable reference of what they can do when marketing themselves for future contracts. It therefore provides an independent contractor with alternatives to seeking permanent work in order to gain new skills that they can later use elsewhere on contract or otherwise increase opportunity for getting contract work.

…helps to get trained in skills relevant to the market

7C Alliance first trialled this Programme between July 2005 to the start of 2006 and was successful in helping to get members trained in skills relevant to the market at the time as well as allow new members to prove their capability to operate in the market through internships, delivering trial projects or performing proofs-of-concept. If this sounds interesting to you then read on for more specifics…

…helps to get certified at lower cost

Back in early 2005, 7C Alliance’s research into the IT market identified that there was a demand for IT resources who were trained in the OGC’s Project Management certification, PRINCE2 – however the time off and money needed to do PRINCE2 training were higher than what many independent contractors were prepared to pay.

…by coming together and sharing facilities

7C Alliance researched how much preparing and delivering a course could cost and whether there was a way it could be provided cheaper to IT contractors. We identified that a course could be provided considerably cheaper by contractors coming together in sufficient numbers so that a cheaper rate could be negotiated with an Accredited Training Organisation (ATO). Furthermore, we found that courses could be provided considerably cheaper still through IT contractors being prepared to share costs of meeting and training room facilities as well as running the training as a project for themselves (and just like a project they might provide on contract to businesses!!).

…with an exam score of 100% for Prince2 Foundation and 75% for Prince2 Practitioner

So in February 2006, 7C Alliance brought together a group of independent IT Business Analysts, Project Support Administrators, Project Managers and Programme Managers – who had all agreed to register with 7C Alliance – and facilitated training in PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner in partnership with an recognised ATO. The result was that 100% of those who sat the course passed the PRINCE2 Foundation exam and 75% passed and became certified PRINCE2 Practitioners.

… side effect: sharing thoughts and experience leads to better insights and other opportunities.

An added bonus realised in the course of doing the training was that contractors were able to share thoughts and experiences on the market for their BA, PM and PgM skills – and some realised that their skills were more relevant to Programme rather than Project Management through doing that. Consequently some people went on to doing the Managing Successful Programmes (MSP) certification and applying their skills to opportunities related to that in the marketplace rather than Project Management.

7C Alliance: Internships leads to higher market value

Besides training in PRINCE2 and MSP, 7C Alliance has offered internships through SKIP. The first one involved a member doing paid part-time work for 7C Alliance as a Project Coordinator for SKIP training in PRINCE2, along with mentoring from members on the course who were currently working as PSOs and were highly experienced in Project Support. Using the principles of both Project Administration and working on contract that she learned from 7C Alliance, our first intern eventually got a contract with a firm of Architects at a rate 30% higher per hour than the rate she was paid at 7C Alliance. Finally, after 18 months’ work with 7C Alliance and the architecture firm, she managed to get a full-time contract with an IT recruitment agency at a rate that was double what she was originally paid through 7C Alliance.

7C Alliance: Providing skills in IT to new members

We also discovered that SKIP can also be used to provide people with skills in IT by leveraging the skills and contacts that they already have but along with deploying and using IT into what they already know how to do. The member who first trialled this approach was working behind a bar down Shaftesbury when we were first introduced to him – but we were made aware that he had University qualifications in Logistics and a passion for business as well as being keen to get skills and experience in IT. A challenge was that English was his second language – and Polish his first. Despite this challenge, 7C Alliance identified an opportunity whereby this member could both gain IT skills and use his language and Logistics knowledge to his advantage. The opportunity identified was helping a Polish rose-growing business explore potential for importing Polish roses into the UK (and instead of them coming through The Netherlands at a much higher marked-up price). 7C Alliance used the member’s Polish and English language skills to get the business owner (who only spoke Polish) to agree for him to do investigation into the import opportunity using a mix of IT, Web and standard market research practices, along with support from 7C Alliance. The results were then put into a report in both English and Polish that was accepted by the business owner and which he then used as information needed for justifying and developing the opportunity. The Polish rose-grower subsequently produced catalogues that he knew – from 7C Alliance’s research – that UK nurseries and landscape design businesses would accept. As a result of this initiative, the member successfully acquired skills and experience from this and has since moved back to Poland to work full-time for the rose-growing business.

7C Alliance: Providing opportunity to new members from abroad

In a similar way to this, 7C Alliance’s logo was designed by another member who had worked in South America but had not worked in the UK. This member was seeking opportunities to prove her skills in graphics design here in the UK with a view to having a local reference she could use for work here. A choice of three logos were designed and presented to a panel of 7C Alliance members. The logo below is the one that was accepted. This member has since gone on to become successful in not only graphics and Web design here in the UK but also Corporate Communications and reporting.

Shiatsu
